The largest US business group urged China to clamp down on rampant copyright abuses and open up its currency to forestall protectionist retaliation by Congress.
In an annual report on China's implementation of its World Trade Organisation (WTO) commitments, the US Chamber of Commerce complained of daunting challenges to American firms in the booming Asian economy.
But it appealed to two US senators who want to punish China over its currency regime to drop a planned bill that would slap punitive tariffs on Chinese imports.
